Currently reading Dashiell Hammet's 'The Maltese Falcon', which is one of my favourite films. Dialogue in the film is at times almost word for word in the book. I came across the following description which gave me pause for thought: Sam Spade is recounting a story to Bridget O'Shaughnessy in which a man decides to leave his wife following an escape from death. Spade describes the man's thoughts thus: ' He felt like somebody had taken the lid off life and let him look at the works.'
